Acabara de sobreviver aos dois sismos que devastaram a Venezuela. Tinha perdido as duas pernas. Poucos instantes antes, os médicos tinham sido obrigados a amputá-las para lhe salvar a vida. Mesmo assim, encontrou forças para sorrir e dizer: <b><i>«Tudo vai ficar bem. Acabaram de me amputar as duas pernas, mas vamos conseguir superar isto.»</i></b> <i>Noutro quarto do mesmo hospital, outra mãe fez apenas um pedido: <b><i>«Reze pelos meus dois filhinhos, que morreram.» </i></b>Uma jovem, em lágrimas, confessava: <b><i>«Perdi os meus pais, os meus avós e os meus irmãos.» </i></b>Estas não são estatísticas. São histórias reais que chegam à Fundação AIS através dos sacerdotes, religiosas e bispos que permanecem junto das vítimas dos sismos que atingiu a Venezuela.</i></p></td>

E é no meio desta tragédia, de proporções gigantescas, que a Igreja permanece ao lado das pessoas. <b><i>«Foi um milagre para quem continua vivo, mas perdemos muitas pessoas»</i></b><i>,</i> diz o Arcebispo de Caracas, D. Raúl Biord. O sofrimento é tão profundo que o prelado identifica desde já um dos maiores desafios para os próximos meses: <em>«Temos de acompanhar aqueles que sobreviveram.»</em> <b>Porque não basta reconstruir edifícios. Quando os sismos aconteceram, encontrava-se em visita à Venezuela. No dia seguinte deveria regressar a Roma, mas decidiu permanecer junto das vítimas. Com outras religiosas, percorreu algumas das zonas mais afectadas, levando alimentos, roupa, palavras de conforto e a certeza de que Deus não as abandonou. Encontraram também equipas de socorro que trabalham dia e noite sem descanso. Muitas destas pessoas perderam tudo e, mesmo assim, continuam a ajudar os outros. A Irmã Bernardita recorda um jovem socorrista a quem perguntou se tinha familiares entre as vítimas. A resposta continua a ecoar-lhe no coração:</p></td>
